What ball should I get?
Paddles get all the attention, but the ball changes how the whole game feels. The good news: there are really only two balls you need to know about, so this is quick.
The short answer
For most recreational play, get the Franklin X-40. For a faster, competitive game, get the Lifetime LT48.
When in doubt, match whatever your regular group already plays.

The Franklin X-40: the one most people play
The Franklin X-40 is the most popular ball by a wide margin, and the one most players agree on, especially for recreational games. It is the official ball of USA Pickleball. If you are buying one ball and want to match what almost everyone else is using, this is it. It is the king for a reason.
The Lifetime LT48: harder and faster
The Lifetime LT48 is a harder ball that plays noticeably faster, with more bounce. It is the pick for competitive players who want a quicker, more demanding game. If your group is playing at a high level and wants pace, this is the one.
A rec player who sometimes plays competitive?
This is where it gets personal. A lot of recreational players prefer to stay on the X-40 even when a game gets competitive, because the LT48 plays quicker and bounces more, and switching mid-group can throw off your timing. If your regular crew plays the X-40, matching that ball keeps your games consistent.
If you specifically want a faster game and everyone is on board, the LT48 is a great move. Just know it is a real change in feel, not a small one.

My personal opinion, never paid for. How we stay independent.My personal preference is a hard, quick ball, so the LT48 is what I choose to play. I have bought over 300 balls at this point, including a couple hundred LT48s, and I have tried a ton of others. That said, the Franklin X-40 is the king: it is the ball most people play, and if you want to fit in at almost any court, you cannot go wrong with it.
Put it together
Start with the Franklin X-40 if you play mostly recreational or just want to match the crowd. Reach for the Lifetime LT48 when you want a harder, faster game and your group is on board. Either way, matching your regular group beats overthinking it.
